Jose Mari Chan and Richard Poon finally team up for a special one night concert this December

POTATO ON THE GO (Music):

The ability to belt is something Filipinos like from a singer.  Most of the time, this becomes the gauge on how good a singer is.  It's always a jaw dropper witnessing such performances.  So I won't contest that.  Composers and record producers, and even singers themselves, know that a recording artist's or concert performer's wide range will be of big help in singing the way a song should be, as how it's written.  However, as I mentioned in my previous post, my preference for song varies on my mood, on what I am doing, on what I want to express.  Of course I also like well belted songs.  'But for moments that I want peaceful joy, relaxation, romantic setting or just a plenty of smiles, I go for mellow music.  So songs of singers like Jose Mari Chan, Richard Poon, Christian Bautista, Sitti and Juris, are household names in my song collection.

So when I got an invitation to the presscon of Jose Mari Chan and Richard Poon for their upcoming concert, I can't help but say a big yes!  It's not just one, but two of my favorites -- an OPM legend and singer-songwriter (Jose Mari Chan) and a modern day crooner and big band music enthusiast (Richard Poon)!  And both of them collaborating for a concert is such an excellent idea, and I got excited to see (and hear) it!  For sure, it will be a night of cool music, pleasant to the ears, heart and soul.

Produced by Record Breaker Events and J&F Productions, co-presented by Zest-Air and conceptualized by Cornerstone Talents & Events, the special concert, entitled as "The Songwriter and The Crooner" is a one night engagement set this December 2, 2011 at the PICC Plenary Hall in Manila.

Mellow music aficionados and OPM fans are in for treat as two generations of crooners perform in a special show that promises to be a good one as it represents the best of the past, represented by the hit making Jose Mari Chan and the promise of a refined future for OPM in Richard Poon.

The two were asked on what they like from each other, as a performer and as a friend.  Richard Poon said Jose Mari Chan makes melodies that make you smile.  "Pag nakikinig ka, it has this positive and cozy feeling," Richard added.  His music is immortal.  He said, "Hindi nakakasawa ang melody."  As a friend, Richard described Joe Mari as very caring, diplomatic and fatherly.  When he was starting, which is a very crucial time for a singer, he shared that Jose Mari Chan event texted him and said, "The hardest part is when you're starting out, do your rounds, do that.  He also said (I just don't know if he's joking or serious about this as many girls will cry for this news hehe), Jose Mari Chan will be his ninong (Godfather / sponsor) in his wedding next year.

Tito Joe, as Richard call Jose Mari Chan, on the other hand described Richard as a musician who a very strong presence on stage.  "He's good looking.  He's the good looking part in the show, I'll provide the charm," Joe Mari candidly shared.  And everyone laughed.  (On a side note, Jose Mari Chan is such a comedian, his voice may be soft but the punchlines he give out were so witty that brought the house down!  :D  Tito Joe added, "If you listen to his album, no other singer in this country can tenderly caress the song that he does."  With that statement coming from one of our music icons, I bet Richard got flattered!  :)

Jose Mari Chan, known for his songs such “Tell Me Your Name” and “Beautiful Girl” among others will be sharing the stage with Poon for the first time ever on the upcoming PICC show.  Meanwhile Richard Poon, a self-made ‘big band crooner’, considers the concert a fulfillment of a long standing dream of singing the classic hits of Chan, as well as performing them with the songwriter himself. “No doubt about it, Jose Mari Chan is an inspiration to me both professionally and artistically” said Poon. “All his songs have that classic quality and as a musician and singer I aspire for the same thing in my career” he continues.

Jose Mari Chan no doubt inspires singers like Poon with his unforgettable hits and inimitable singing style. The singer also impresses by being the only male OPM singer garnered the Diamond Record award for record sales of his album “Constant Change.”

Comparatively, Richard Poon’s career is right on track as the young singer already has his platinum certified albums and multiple singing awards and recognitions to his name. The singer is also making waves as part of ASAP Rocks’ Sessionistas.

The two promise an unforgettable evening of hits and classic music and a few surprises as well. Among those surprises perhaps includes guests singer-songwriter and harpist Noelle Cassandra and comedian Pokwang.  Jose Mari and Richard will have their own separate sets and will have a collaboration towards the end.  Some of the songs we never thought were from Jose Mari Chan will be performed during the concert.  Examples are Hahanapin Ko (interpreted by Anthony Castelo in Metropop), I Remember the Boy (performed by Joey Albert) and Mamang Sorbetero (sang by Celeste Legaspi).  They will also have Christmas songs and we'll hear their collaboration on the classic Christmas in our Hearts.

The Songwriter and the Crooner are also proud that the concert will benefit AGAPP (Aklat GabayAruga tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa)  and SPED Children of Bulacan. AGAPP, headed by Ms. Pinky Abellada, aims to help public schools in building quality classrooms for kinders . This fills a vital gap in education. With this proper education venue, children will perform better in school, leading to a more productive adult life. The other beneficiary is the SPED Children of Bulacan.  Jose Mari Chan advocates for education as he know its vital role in country's development.  Richard Poon also suggested the idea that he and Joe Mari can even be special teachers in the program ( and joked they can teach Chinese haha).  But they really are into this cause.
